Your Pets And Your Estate

It’s been awhile since I’ve written here, my apologies for that! Sometimes life throws you a curve ball and you just have to go with it.

Here’s what I’ve been up to that has more or less taken over my life, at least for the short term, and why I’ve been MIA.

A few weeks ago I had some kind of intestinal bug that made me sick enough that I couldn’t do things for myself. I am single, I live by myself and all my life I’ve always done things for myself.

This time I had to call on a friend to pick up some over the counter meds and some 7-Up for me. Asking for help has never been easy for me.

I recuperated, all is well, and then a few days later I realized that my neighbors hadn’t seen me for a few days and hadn’t checked on me.

That scared me and sent me down a rabbit hole of what ifs, in particular the terrorizing rabbit hole of ‘what if something happens to me, what will happen to my dog Max and cat Raven?’.

So I immediately started working on setting up a support system for myself and the boys and updating my estate.

I wish I could say this has been a smooth journey but it has not, it has been extremely frustrating, discouraging and disheartening. I have been running into roadblocks left and right, particularly when it comes to Max and Raven care.

In looking for possible short term care for the boys, I have not found anything or anyone that meets my standards. While I don’t worry so much about Raven as he is quite capable of taking care of himself, I do worry about Max. Max is high maintenance, a 14 year old natural barker who has canine cognitive dysfunction, a disease from which he will not recover but will only progress. Max will need specialized, continuous care.

I talked to the humane society and they do not offer a proactive program where if something were to happen to me my boys would be immediately taken in and taken care of. Anything like that would have to be initiated through my estate by the executor. And there’s no guarentee the boys would get in.

The vet’s office said that people usually have their friends or family take their animals. My family is in Illinois and as I said above, Max needs specialized care.

Googling has brought no satisfactory results.

A part of me is baffled that it’s so difficult to find this type of service locally, another part of me is despondent and exhausted with the search and the results I’m notfinding.

So that’s why you haven’t heard from me. If anyone has any ideas on how I can move forward with this search, I would love hearing from you. You can simply leave a comment here. Thank you in advance!

If you haven’t already started investigating this information for you and your animal pals, I highly recommend you start immediately. While this is an old post and information is probably be outdated, you might find Estate Planning For Pet Ownersa good place to start your search. It definitely has some points which are good food for thought.

You’ll also find useful information in this article from the HSUS, Backup Plan. It’s devastating to realize the lack of our knowledge sends an estimated 5-7 million pets to shelters each year after their owners die or become incapacitated. In communities with high populations of senior citizens, pets outliving their owners can make up half a shelter’s intakes.

Because I want to get this taken care of immediately, I am pulling back on a couple of aspects of the business: the Discover Your Intuition Class is on hold, as are the workshops.

I am continuing with the 1:1 Animal Communication services and the 1:1 Shamanic services of working with an animal ally and divination readings. Be sure to set up your free discovery session with me to find out how we can best work together.
