Pets with a Purpose

I was reading a blog where the author was writing about how our pets have a purpose, what it is and how important it is to recognize each one’s purpose.  It got me to thinking about my crew:

Shiloh, otherwise know as Best Horse, is the holder of wisdom in the family.  He is my mentor, my teacher, my clown.  He has taught me about horses and relationship, and loves me enough to put up with my human foibles.

My dog, sweet Emmie, is the holder of peace. She is sweet, loving and generous and is willing to be with anyone, 2 or 4 legged, who is having a difficult time. Emmie will always offer to share her bone or beloved toy skunk when needed.

Dog Teddy is the holder of hospitality. He welcomes everyone and has never met a stranger. He views his job as the neighborhood greeter and takes it very seriously, yet with a big smile on his face. Teddy will make your day simply by resting his head on your knee.

My cat Mitize is the holder of dignity, even though she is the queen of the stink-eye. She teaches us decorum and self respect, as well as good manners. Mitzie teaches us there is rarely a need to hurry and always time for a refreshing nap.

Cat Billy is the holder of love. He wants nothing more to be loved and to share his love with all in the household. He freely gives kitty hugs and head bumps.

Raven is the holder of play. As the youngest he takes this role very seriously, chasing his ‘mousie’ and the rest of us around. He teaches that life is full of excitement, possibilities and fun, and that sometimes you simply need to crash.

As for myself? My job is to create for the crew the freedom to be who they are and to have an active, participating role in our family structure. I pay the mortgage, they make the house a home.

What about you? How do you recognize the purpose of the animals in your household? Please share in the comments.
