In Review: Alt Facts and Myths

pug swing alt facts

Raise your hand if you’re tired of hearing “alt facts”.

According to Wikipedia, that phrase was first used by Kellyanne Conway during a Meet the Press interview on January 22, 2017. In an interview with Chuck Todd, when asked to explain why Spicer “utter[ed] a provable falsehood”, Conway stated that Spicer was giving “alternative facts”. Todd responded, “Look, alternative facts are not facts. They’re falsehoods.”[1]

Don’t worry, this isn’t a political post. It just feels to me as if “alt facts” have been going on in the animal world long before that term became popular.

Take horses, for example. It’s not uncommon for unscrupulous horse sellers to take advantage of inexperienced or first time horse buyers:

  • Horses that are drugged before shown to prospective buyers and turn out lame after the drug has worn off
  • “Oh, he doesn’t rear or buck”. These very words were said to me before I bought my horse Shiloh. He didn’t rear, but he did buck
  • “You won’t need to have a vet check done. My vet was just out here last week and said everything was fine”

Other hot spots of alt facts in the pet world, from my perspective at least, center around pet nutrition, the use of holistic vets, the use of alternative modalities, rawhides, chews, kitty litter, kitty litter boxes. With a quick search on the internet, you can find facts supporting anything and everything – maybe that’s the result of ‘good’ marketing, who knows.

Myths and Animal Communication

Workshop Myth Busting & AC CoverIn the world of animal communication I don’t see alt facts as much as myths. These myths are neither based in truth nor act as metaphors, but they are capable of creating and spreading misinformation and alt facts. As a matter of fact, it’s the very non-tangible work of animal communicaiton that can be the fertile ground for these misinterpretations and misunderstandings. So I have created a workshop addressing these animal communication myths.

I encourage you to join me in this online workshop on August 10 at 7:00 PM MOUNTAIN where I’ll be setting the record straight and doing some good ol’ fashioned myth-busting around a few of the more popular misconceptions of animal communication. You can register and find out more information here.

This workshop is a highly interactive experience, a dynamic mixture of lecture, Q&A, participant chat, and making connections with like-minded folks throughout the call. You will leave the workshop having a better understanding of the myths that have been perpetuated around animal communication and what the truth is, thereby preparing you for what you can accurately expect as you delve into this wonderful world of animal communication. Check your time here.
